Moreover, when the Cold War was considered to be over, important agreements (START I) in the field of disarmament and nonproliferation between Russia the U.S. and START IIon further reduction and limitation of strategic offensive arms were signed by the presidents of Russia and the United States in 1991 and 1993 respectively. The sidesagreed thatthe latter treaty enter into force as soon as Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan have ratified the START I treaty and join the Nonproliferation Treaty as non-nuclear states. START II agreement provided for the reduction of nuclear warheads on strategic delivery missiles by 50% compared with their number defined by the START I Treaty. In 2010, the Start III Treaty between the United States and Russia on further reduction and limitation of strategic offensive arms was signed by the presidents of said countries, which entered into force in 2011.However, we should not deceive ourselves that the end of the Cold War made the threat untenable. In some respects, the situation is even more dangerous. There are nuclear powers, such as Pakistan and India, both having over a hundred warheads, who are reluctant to play nicely with one another. Also at present, the cooperation between the United States and the Russian Federation on missile defense is suspended due to the worsening of relations amidst the Ukrainian crisis. In particular, in 2014 in connection with the conflict in Eastern Ukraine, the situation surrounding the reunification of the Crimea with Russia, and the aggravation of relations between Moscow and Washington on the background of anti-Russian sanctions, the Lower House of the Russian Parliament (Duma) suggested to unilaterally terminate the Start III agreement. Earlier Russia had repeatedly demanded “legally binding” guarantees from Washington to ensure that the U.S. tactical nuclear weapons are not aimed at Russian strategic ballistic systems.According to some nuclear war analysts, a war involving nuclear weapons is inevitable. Even if the risk is just half a percent per year, that would mean a five percent chance of nuclear war each decade. Given sufficient time, even a small possibility becomes a certainty. The only way to prevent such a war would be worldwide disarmament, i.e. the consistent observing of the above-mentioned treaties and agreements. However, unfortunately, this is something that is very difficult to foresee happening any time soon.LiteratureBikini Atoll nuclear test site, http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1339 (retrieved on October 7th)Friedman G. Nuclear Radiation
Nuclear Radiation
Виктор Chernobay Biology 115
Nuclear energy was discovered in the process of creating the atomic bomb. After ученые проводиться more экспериментов, they found that nuclear power was a clean and efficient way to производства энергии. "The first nuclear reactor was created on December 2, 1942, at the University of Chicago by Энрико Ферми." (Editors of Scientific America, 1995). The discovery of nuclear energy provided a new source of energy and an alternative to the use of natural resources: such as coal, oil, water, and wood. At the same time, nuclear energy could be used in a деструктивных way, such as the atomic bomb.
At that time, the discovery of a new source of energy was a very significant event. By using a small amount of plutonium and uranium, two радиоактивных elements, an enormous amount of energy could be obtained. Nuclear energy can be produced in two different ways, by the fission or fusion process. Fission involves the breaking up of heavier atoms into lighter atoms. In a nuclear fission reaction, two smaller nuclei of approximately equal масс имеет образуются from the splitting of a large nucleus. This splitting of an atom produces a large amount of energy. This process is the most common form of nuclear power. Fusion is a method that combines lighter into atoms heavier atoms. In a nuclear fusion reaction, large nucleus is образуются from two small nuclei joined together. Fusion reactions are difficult to produce because of the repulsion of the atom's negatively charged electron clouds and the positively charged nucleus. (LeMay, Beall, Robblee, Брауэр, 1996). Fusion is mostly used to create the hydrogen bomb. (The World Book Encyclopedia, 1990). The byproduct of nuclear energy is radiation. Radiation is created from the частицы (strontium-90, cesium-137, радона-222, криптон-85, and nitrogen-16) that are given off as a result of the splitting of atoms. (Gale Encyclopedia of Science, 1996) (Demmin, 1994).
As time went on the attitudes of people towards nuclear energy changed. There were many positive and negative aspects for the use of nuclear power. Недавно, people worldwide have started questioning the continued use of nuclear power. Due to the deaths resulting from the 1986 Чернобыль ядерный реактор аварии, as well as the adverse effect the aftermath of the accident had on the environment, there has been a public outcry concerning the safety of society. As with many controversial issues, this topic has been широко debated, но и solution has not been determined.
