The first Card was published in 1843 but before that, they were mostly hand made. The cards replaced personal holiday verbal greetings. And soonthe production of Christmas Gift Cards became a special branchof the printing industry. The author of the first printing card series was Sir Henry Cole, the first director of the Victoria and Albert Museum.Nowadays the British use Christmas Gift Cardsbroadly. They sent their cards before Christmas Day. Some families decorate their houses with cards received from friends and relatives.Christmas treeThe tradition of putting Christmas tree at homeis connected with another custom of decorating the houses with evergreen branches. The Christmas tree is a symbol of the eternal nature. This tradition was borrowed from Germany and the first amazing decorated Christmas tree was presented to children by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert at Windsor Palace.Today there are different Christmas trees that decorate houses, shops and squaresin Britain. They are natural from the forest or planted special for holidays or they are artificial.Modern tradition – Christmas salesOur century is a century of consuming. Large stores and small shops, all of them prepare for the main holiday. People buy gifts and clothes for Christmas. The number of purchases is very large. And everyone wants to save money. That’s why stores make sales in order to attract as more consumers as possible. Officially, sales areannounced in the last week of December. All people are involved in the festive fever.ConclusionMany traditions are remembered in Britain. Some of them are nice, others are funny. But they are loved by British people. They make their lives especial. Christmas is a holiday of happiness and kindness. The traditions help to save its main purpose – to give each other attention and love. The globalization changes our life and our habits. We borrow many things from other cultures, not always positive, and the traditions to celebrate this grandiose holiday helps British not to lose their originality and special mentality in the modern world. It is worthy ofrespect and imitation.
