However, the young lady failed to use counter-arguments as a part of her rhetoric. In her address to voters, Jessica asks: “Who cares about this election?” which, probably, means everyone should care about this event. Nevertheless, the audience’s reaction suggests the address had the opposite effect, and some people present start wondering whether the election is really worth caring about. The referenced speech teaches several lessons to consider when planning a public address. First, it is essential to carefully analyze all rhetorical devices to be used. Counter-arguments make a great way to persuade the target audience if used appropriately. Second, a speaker is suggested to test the arguments on a small group of relatives or friends before delivering them to a larger audience. By using this strategy, a speaker gets an idea of the impression that his speech might have on the public. Furthermore, it helps to detect and fix mistakes and other issues before the speech is delivered to a bigger audience.5. An Overly Complicated LanguageSome speakers try to persuade their target audience by using terminology or jargon. They believe such an approach helps them demonstrate their vast knowledge and expertise in a certain field. The IABC business speaker was caught in this trap by using too many “buzzwords.” Based on the target audience’s reaction, the selected strategy does not work as intended because some people present at the meeting are puzzled, while others are bored or irritated.Although the speech can be described as disastrous, it teaches several important lessons that might help one succeed as a public speaker. First, a speaker should strive to gain an in-depth understanding of the target audience and plan his address so that it aligns with their needs, expectations, and education level. Oftentimes, “buzzwords” do not demonstrate a speaker’s proficiency but rather imply his failure to paraphrase or explain complex ideas in simple terms. Second, a speaker must create a balanced set of rhetorical tools in his speech. A heavy reliance on terminology, jargonisms, and other difficult-to-understand words and phrases means a speaker cares about ethos and logos but ignores pathos which is valued by most audiences. In summary, effective public speaking is a sophisticated combination of science and art, and one needs time to master it. The essay introduced the golden rules of effective public speaking and applied those rules to five public speeches that can be identified as disastrous. Despite their horrific effect on the target audience, these speeches have several lessons to teach those who strive to succeed as public speakers. The first lesson is that effective public speaking demands careful planning. One should know the target audience and understand their expectations to deliver the speech matching these expectations. Second, a public speaker should demonstrate proficiency in a balanced use of rhetorical tools like logos, ethos, and pathos, as well as numerous stylistic devices. The third lesson is about acknowledging the significance of verbal and non-verbal tools in delivering the message. Finally, a speaker should practice an address several times to detect and fix all the errors before a speech is delivered to a larger audience. ReferencesEsenwein, B. (2016).
